Learning about Frida Kahlo


Doing a little research before coming to Mexico City, I learned that the Frida Kahlo Museum was located very close to Andrew & Mariana’s apartment. On our Delta flight, I had a chance to watch Frida, a movie about Frida Kahlo starting Salma Hayek. The movie was excellent and I learned so much. So, I suggested to Greg that we both watch the movie (on Amazon Prime) before going to see the Frida Kahlo Museum. 


The movie really shows what an incredibly complex woman she was, and gave you insights into her tumultuous relationship with her husband, artist Diego Rivera. Both Diego and Frida were members of the Communist Party and hosted Leon Trotsky after he was exiled from Russia to Mexico by Stalin.

Frida had a whole host of medical issues including having polio as a young child and over 22 surgeries due to a horrific accident when she was 18. She died in 1954 at the age of 47. This was her last painting before she died. The painting included the phrase “Viva La Vida” which for Frida, means celebrating life despite its joys and sorrows.

Downtown Mexico City

In the morning, Greg and I walked back to the center of Coyoacán to the Artists’ Market.  There are so many interesting, beautiful buildings.  In the afternoon, we drove to the downtown area of Mexico City. Officially known as the Plaza de la Constitución, El Zócalo is a huge square marking the historic center of the city. Prior to the Spanish invasion, El Zócalo was the principal ceremonial site for the Aztecs. El Zócalo is the center of government which makes it a popular place for protests and political rallies.  On one side of El Zócalo is the Palacio National de México where the President of Mexico lives and works. It is also a place where many of Diego Rivera’s murals that depict the history of Mexico reside. Walking Tour of Coyoacán

Today, Greg and I went on a walking tour of Coyoacán with Gus - We were the only ones on the tour! We learned a lot as Gus was a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide.  One focus of the tour was about the history of Coyoacán. In the 12th century, the Tepanecs established a village on the shore of Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. They named the village Coyoacán, meaning “place of many coyotes.” In 1519, the Tepanecs supported Hernán Cortés against the Aztecs and Cortés launched his attack against Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital, from   Coyoacán. After defeating the Aztecs, Cortés made Coyoacán the capital of New Spain. Gus told us about Porfirio Diaz, the Mexican general and politician who served  seven terms (referred to as the Porfiriato) as President of Mexico prior to the Mexican Revolution. Bright Colors Everywhere!

This morning, we had a chance to explore Andrew & Mariana’s neighborhood some more with Mariana as our guide. She is on spring break this week - she is a Professor at the University of Mexico. Andrew stayed back as he was working this morning.  After a long, grey “Spring” in Minnesota, what stands out the most is all the beautiful colors of the buildings, the flowering trees, and the market. We timed our visit with the flowering of the Jacaranda trees which are blooming on every block. The Mercado Coyoacán is another colorful feast for the eyes! There are many buildings with ornate wood doors.
